Hospital Weekends

The last few weeks have been very stressful for my family.

In the last 3 weeks -- I have been spending weekends in the hospital. My dad had to be admitted 3 times for 3 different reasons.

Week 1 - he was admitted to have some stones removed from his prostate (4 hospital days)

Week 2 - after coming from the hospital still on a catheter, he complained that his hemmorhoids were hurting and had it removed (2 hospital days)

Week 3 - Wednesday July 09 he came home from the hospital -- Thursday July 10 midnight he was rushed to the ER for severe bleeding. 5 bags of blood had to be transfused. (5 hospital days). Mom was sooo scared -- she just cried and cried over the phone when I called her from the office.

Now he's better and finally the doctors have given him the go signal to go home and rest. He will have to rest until they leave for Seattle on the 22nd to celebrate my brother's birthday.

My mom was a real trooper -- she stayed with Papa in the evenings in all the days he was admitted. And in the mornings she would process all the paper work needed for their vacation leaves from work and health papers and stuff.

I on the other hand would stay with papa in the morning after work --and Ian would stay with papa in the afternoon until mom comes back. Relatives from Seattle would call us almost everyday to check on his status. My lola and mom's brothers checked on us on a regular basis.

It just feels odd-- that the strongest man in the house felt so helpless and weak in the last 3 weeks. My dad has always been a strong man -- and seeing him in soo much pain was a feeling I wouldnt want to go through again. Mom was very strong for the both of them and I wish I would have the patience and energy she showed during the entire ordeal.

Our family will still go through a lot since papa will need another round of screening in the States..but hopefully everything will turn out fine--and our weekends will instead be spent at home eating mom's home cooked dinner--dvd weekends or visiting old folks in Bulacan.

One day isang araw...I decided to make a healthy salad (Chunky Chicken Salad, March Issue) from the latest copy of Yummy Magazine. I've tried on several recipes from Yummy and I am simply too lazy to post pictures and recipes of them here. But mind you, my family and officemates are my willing taste testers, and so far, I have heard no complaints.

But one thing is for sure..Yummy magazines (witnessed by my besty Kimmy and partner Alexie) will definitely work out your appetite for cooking. Pictures and recipes will make you drool. Not to mention give you that adrenaline rush to whip something neat for your friends and special someone to taste!

I must say for Kim who lives in VA and Alexie in SG, my two cooking buddies are enjoying the taste of home.

This is an essay written by a Korean student i
want to share with you. (Never mind the grammar;
it's the CONTENT that counts) Maybe it is timely to
think about this in the midst of all the confusion
at present.

MY SHORT ESSAY ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES
Jaeyoun Kim

Filipinos always complain about the corruption in
the Philippines . Do you really think the corruption
is the problem of the Philippines ? I do not
think so. I strongly believe that the problem is
the lack of love for the Philippines .

Let me first talk about my country, Korea .
It might help you understand my point.
After the Korean War, South Korea was one
of the poorest countries in the world. Koreans
had to start from scratch because entire country was
destroyed after the Korean War, and we had no
natural resources.

Koreans used to talk about the Philippines , for
Filipinos were very rich in Asia . We envy Filipinos.
Koreans really wanted to be well off like
Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine.
My father & brother also died because of famine.
Korean government was very corrupt and is still very
corrupt beyond your imagination, but Korea was
able to develop dramatically because Koreans really
did their best for the common good with their heart
burning with patriotism.

Koreans did not work just for themselves but also
for their neighborhood and country. Education inspired
young men with the spirit of patriotism.

40 years ago, President Park took over the
government to reform Korea . He tried to borrow money
from other countries, but it was not possible to get a
loan and attract a foreign investment because the
economic situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea had
only three factories. So, President Park sent many mine
workers and nurses to Germany so that
they could send money to Korea to build a factory.
They had to go through horrible experience.

In 1964, President Park visited Germany to borrow
money. Hundred of Koreans in Germany came to the
airport to welcome him and cried there as they saw
the President Park . They asked to him, "President,
when can we be well off?" That was the only question
everyone asked to him. President Park cried with
them and promised them that Korea would be well
off if everyone works hard for Korea , and the President
of Germany got the strong impression on them
and lent money to Korea . So, President Park was
able to build many factories in Korea . He always
asked Koreans to love their country from their heart.

Many Korean scientists and engineers in the USA
came back to Korea to help developing country
because they wanted their country to be well off.
Though they received very small salary, they did their
best for Korea . They always hoped that their children
would live in well off country.

My parents always brought me to the places where
poor and physically handicapped people live. They
wanted me to understand their life and help them..
I also worked for Catholic Church when I was in the army..
The only thing I learned from Catholic Church was that we
have to love our neighborhood. And, I have loved my
neighborhood. Have you cried for the
Philippines ? I have cried for my country several
times. I also cried for the Philippines because of so many
poor people. I have been to the New Bilibid
prison. What made me sad in the prison were the
prisoners who do not have any love for their country.
They go to mass and work for Church. They pray
everyday.

However, they do not love the Philippines . I
talked to two prisoners at the maximum-security compound,
and both of them said that they would leave the
Philippines right after they are released from the
prison. They said that they would start a new life in other
countries and never come back to the Philippines .

Many Koreans have a great love for Korea so that
we were able to share our wealth with our neighborhood.
The owners of factory and company were distributed their
profit to their employees fairly so that employees could
buy what they needed and saved money for the
future and their children.

When I was in Korea , I had a very strong faith and
wanted to be a priest. However, when I came to the Philippines ,
I completely lost my faith.
I was very confused when I saw many unbelievable
situations in the Philippines . Street kids always make me sad,
and I see them everyday. The Philippines is the only Catholic
country in Asia , but there are too many poor people here.
People go to church every Sunday to pray, but nothing has
been changed.

My parents came to the Philippines last week and
saw this situation. They told me that Korea was much poorer
than the present Philippines when they
were young. They are so sorry that there are so
many beggars and street kids. When we went to Pasangjan,
I forced my parents to take a boat because
it would fun. However, they were not happy after
taking a boat. They said that they would not take the boat
again because they were sympathized the
boatmen, for the boatmen were very poor and had a
small frame. Most of people just took a boat and enjoyed it.
But, my parents did not enjoy it because of love
for them.

My mother who has been working for Catholic Church
since I was very young told me that if we just go to
mass without changing ourselves, we are not
Catholic indeed. Faith should come with action.
She added that I have to love Filipinos and do good things
for them because all of us are same and have received a great
love from God. I want Filipinos to love their
neighborhood and country as much as they love God
so that the Philippines will be well off.

I am sure that love is the keyword, which Filipinos
should remember. We cannot change the sinful structure at once.
It should start from person. Love must start in everybody,
in a s mall scale and have to grow. A lot of
things happen if we open up to love. Let's put away
our prejudices and look at our worries with our new eyes.

I discover that every person is worthy to be
loved. Trust in love, because it makes changes possible.
Love changes you and me. It changes people, contexts and
relationships. It changes the world. Please love your
neighborhood and country.

Jesus Christ said that whatever we do to others we
do to Him. In the Philippines , there is God for people who
are abused and abandoned. There is God who is crying for love.
If you have a child, teach them how to love the Philippines .
Teach them why they have to love their neighborhood and country.
You already know that God also will be very happy if you love others.

That's all I really want to ask you Filipinos.

Yipeeeeyayooo! My Holga is loaded and ready! (Thanks to Kimmy for ordering it for me and Aissa for bringing it to Manille!) I decided to use the 135m film, and I am still on the look out for black and white films (with a certain version) that I can use. Not all digi labs can develop bnw films though. This plastic cam is older than old school but the pictures are definitely one of a kind!

I cant wait for the results of my first Holga roll!

In my quest to lose weight, and which I failed (am failing) miserably in keeping that strict diet. I have turned to alternatives. No not diet pills (just yet) I am not much of gym person. But of course body workout is also needed to shed the cursed pounds and which brings me to my 2 other alternatives. Badminton and Yoga.

So I am trying badminton and I'm giving it a month.. my current weight (yes for more advertising, thus more pressure to lose) is 118lbs with a 33inch waist line (eoow). My goal is to lose 2lbs and 2 inches by the end of March. And another 2lbs and and another 2 inches by mid April. Target weight is 112 lbs and 27" waist line by May.

Badminton will be played as much as 2 or 3x a week at Metro Badminton in Mandaluyong. # of times depends on how often my badminton buddies can play with me. This will be after work from 7.30am to 9.30am most probably.

Now there's Bikram Yoga.

Hiring an instructor will be Php 300/hr but this is definitely optional. Play schedules will be dependent on finding badminton buddies to play with.

Bikram Yoga on the other hand offers Php1,000 rate for 3 sessions for beginners (free use of facilities) This package by Bikram Yoga Manila is designed to allow first timers to acclimate to the heat and gain further exposure to the Bikram yoga series of postures.

There's a Php 5,000/month package to take as many classes as you want in 30 days. After taking your first 3 classes, you will need to determine how often you wish to attend class on a weekly basis. This will then allow the instructors to make a recommendation on which package best suits your desired frequency of practice. Another studio which is the Sundar Bikram Yoga Greenhills offers a cheaper rate for their classes, Php700 unlimited sessions in 1 week for starters and Php4600 unlimited a month. But considering the traffic around the Ortigas-Greenhills area coming from work, this may not be a good choice for a studio location.

The Bikram Yoga Manila studio in QC offers classes everyday the most convenient schedule for me is at 8.30am M-F and 9.30 am Sat and Sun. Same with Sundar Bikram Yoga Greenhills studio.

Now I will also need a yoga buddy, but I can always try this on my own and have the discipline to go to the classes on a regular basis.

Whether I end up doing badminton and yoga I will still with stick with my brown rice - all wheat bread diet c/o Kimmy. And get more motivation talk from her as well. I hope to reach my target weight goal in 2.5 months.

Suddenly

These past few days have been specially hard on a lot of people you know. Taken by definite surprise. Nobody wanted this to happen. You did not see it happening, well --not just yet.

In 24 hours..it slowly sinks in..and you hate the feeling. You think you can brush it off but you cant. Everytime you walk into your family's space and see these people walk and talk their way everyday, it simply breaks your heart. Having no choice, you know you would have to let go of them..eventually -- but not this soon.

A dark cloud looms over the family, a sigh escapes the members every now and then. Tears fall sporadically (for now), talk here and there, each family moving around with a heavy heart.

The next few weeks will definitely be hard ... until this is all over by the 5th full moon.

Until then..the family continues to be a unit. Bounded by stories, experience, joys, pain and love.

You just have to move on....and so shall they.

I should not be doing this (they will not like the attention ) but they have made a difference in the past year or so that I've spent with them. And its definitely worth sharing.

And this shall be my last post on anything about the late Heath Ledger. I have still kept my eyes open for any updates about his death, and will still be checking. But this particular article touched me and my besty kimmy a whole lot.

Women might have envied Michelle Williams when they learned that she was dating the actor in 2005. But I believe no sane woman would still want to be in her shoes after finding out the man she once loved or may still be inlove with, has died all of a sudden.

Her world may be full of "what ifs" right now...

A lot of people will blog or have blogged about Heath Ledger's sudden demise.

For some odd or maybe logical reason me and my besties kim and nice and a handful of our friends have been affected by his death. His first movie "10 things I hate about you" is definitely among the top 10 teen movies during our time. I for one seriously wished that he would end up with Julia Stiles in real life.

I've been closely following the updates about his death, but I won't be posting news bits about it here. The media has been doing it's share of informing and may be magnifying the issues at hand.

I would just like to share Heath's family as they remember their son and brother. Of course after all of this hoopla has died down, Heath was more than just a hollywood star and a hottie, he was once a son, a brother, a father and a partner.

I admit, reading the following article made me cry:

HEATH LEDGER's grieving family members shared heartfelt and candid memories of their departed loved one with an Aussie newspaper, People reports.

According to the mag, the death notices section of Friday's West Australian finds Heath's mother SALLY writing:

"Our darling boy, special in so many ways to all of us. You knew you were so loved. You lived life with courage and daring and we are so grateful for the wonderful times we shared. We will be there for MATILDA."

The actor's older sister KATE -- addressing her brother by the nickname "Roast," according to People -- writes:

"I can hardly breathe when I try to write this. We were the ultimate in soul mates. I feel both my heart and life have been torn apart. I loved our special talks, our daily chats from where ever you were in the world.

"I especially loved all the precious time we spent together. We were so fortunate to have you as long as we did. You were so many things to so many people, but to me you were just my little brother.

"There will never, ever be another 'Heath' and I think that in itself is the greatest tragedy.

"I will continue to talk with you everyday and love you just as if you were here. You will never leave my thoughts 'Roast,' ever."

Heath's father KIM adds:

"My beautiful boy, so loving, so talented, so independent, so caring, so young ... no more chess games, mate ... this is it, couldn't beat you anyway!

"My body aches for the sound of your voice, our chats, our laughs and our life and times together.

"Your truly varied artistic skills, insatiable desire to improve, and eclectic abilities set you apart from any other person on the planet ... it had only just started for you ... and for us to further enjoy. We were one, in soul and commitment. Just ... Father and Son. I will love you forever, Dad."

And last, the family as a whole reflects upon their loss:

"How do we describe our sudden and tragic loss? ... You were the most amazing individual, 'old soul' in a young man's body.

"You so loved us, as we dearly loved you. As a close knit and very private family unit we have observed you, so determined, yet quietly traveling in your self-styled path in life, nothing would get in your way ... no mountain too tall, no river too wide.

"You dreamed your dreams and lived them with passion and intelligent commitment. We have been privileged to accompany you on a ride through life that has simply been amazing, and through it all, we have loved each other beyond imagination.

"Your true legacy lives on in beautiful little Matilda, who will always remain in the greatest of care. Our hearts are broken."

Lonely Lonely Lonely

With Darwin off to work halfway around the world, I'm again left to my lonesome self. I also get to travel in my own way. With my knack for researching timezones, cities, ports and countries he would visit because of work, I get to learn more about the world. It's fun and interesting, I guess that's the only perk I get from this situation that we have.

I haven't had a decent sleep yet, I can't yet. I am still not used to him being away. Friends who experience the same with their own partners or hubbies can attest to this. It's never easy.

But you get used to it..the first week is always the hardest.

As of this writing he is still in transit, it's gonna take him almost 2 days (manila time) of travel to get to Gran Canaria. It's a group of Spanish Islands which is much nearer to the West of Africa than to Europe. So until I receive an email from him that he arrived safely and that he is ok, it would mean more sleepless moments for me.

Now I'm back to counting the months, weeks, days, and eventually the hours until he comes home.

Until then, the only thing I can do until he comes home is to keep my phone line free incase he calls, communicate endlessly via email, be strong, and pray that he is kept safe, healthy and sane.

Those who have seen the album I posted with Arvin and Lia's wedding photos have also read the short introduction. I wrote "Lia was very pretty..she didnt cry. We did. (Nice, Cheksa and Myself) I remember Cheska saying " wala na tayong baby" I am hoping no one was able to capture us crying..paging Dino Lara's team. No crying Pictures please :p"

I woke up with 2 unregistered missed calles on my mobile, it turns out it was Lia calling. She texted me to go online. When I got to the office I did, she sent me a link of their wedding photos c/o Dino Lara.

Alas..I found this picture among the 60 or so snapshots...a picture of me crying..

Oh dear.. I was crying and laughing at my silly self for crying when this shot was taken. Open mouth and all.

All the more reason why I loooove black and white stolen photos just like this shot of Nice's hand and the Pia, Lia's adorable Niece. I'll be saving the couple's pixies once I get to upload all the other shots.
